HOLE 1 - par 4

A thoughtful test of control rather than power

Hole 1 is a tough but inviting opening par 4 that immediately asks golfers to respect the course. It looks playable from the tee, but poor decision-making early can quickly lead to trouble and a difficult start to the round.

Tee shot & Fairway strategy

The opening tee shot is more subtle than it first appears and rewards restraint as much as confidence
THE SHAPE OF THE TARGET

GREEN COMPLEX

A spacious green, divided into multiple pin zones and defined by graceful undulations

The green slopes away at the back, meaning shots that carry too long will often run through and off the surface, leaving a difficult downhill recovery back onto the putting area. The front of the green is well protected by bunkering, and short approaches are frequently rejected, demanding both precise distance control and thoughtful shot selection.

THE FINAL TEST

PUTTING & SHORT GAME

This is a hole where control on and around the target is essential

Being below the hole is critical, as putts played from above are significantly faster and far harder to control. Missing long leaves an especially awkward recovery, with chips from behind the green made difficult by the slope falling away.

SUMMER PLAY

THE COURSE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

In summer, the fairways offer more run, meaning tee shots will travel and release further after they land. You can afford to miss the fairway slightly and still find a playable lie, making the hole feel a little more forgiving, while still rewarding good positioning.
HOLE 1 INSIGHTS

HAZARDS & MISS PATTERNS

Protected at every stage, this hole asks for patience, accuracy, and good judgement
  • Out of bounds traces the entire right-hand side
  • A large tree on the right blocks the approach and complicates recovery
  • A strategically placed fairway bunker on the left influences the ideal line from the tee
  • Well-positioned greenside bunkers guard the front of the green
  • The ground falls away behind the green, with a run-off area

Best miss: Slightly left

Worst miss: Right

PRO TIP

Treat this as a hole where par is an excellent result and resist the temptation to chase distance, especially early in the round. Aim to finish short of the left fairway bunker for the best angle into the green; longer hitters can challenge the right side, but the risk is high and the consequences are severe.
